Pozsgai, I.

Objective: To gain insight into the level of knowledge about Helicobacter pylori (H.p) and general information on ulcer among patients with gastric problems.

Methods and sample: Questionnaire survey with questions about the level of knwoledge on concerning H.p. and the causes of gastric ulcer, on a sample of 100 patients on the waiting list for gastroscopy from a family practice, medical departments of two county referral hospitals and one municipal hospital. Patients were grouped according to age, educational level, profession, social status and settlement type.

Results: Infections were found to be more frequent in those with poor social and hygienic conditions and incidence increased with age. The majority of the patients in the sample have not heard about the bacteria and ignored the way infection occurs.

Conclusions: The lack of information about the disease makes it necessary to strengthen health education efforts.
