Trends in the need for home care in the population
Török, Csilla:

Objective:To assess the changes that occurred in the forms of nursing care at home introduced in 1996 and in the needs for this service by 2002.
Methods and sample: A survey was conducted in the Country Hospital, Zalaegerszeg, Hungary and in two family practices, in October 2002. The sample was made up of inpatients receiving acute care at the surgical, trauma care and internal medical services of the hospital and patients visiting the two doctors' offices. The survey used a questionnaire. Altogether 200 completed questionnaires were received and analysed.
Findings: The respondents maintained that a part of inpatient care could be replaced by care in the patient's home. The greatest demands were seen among the middle-aged and elderly population, with nursing care being mostly needed; the need for activities requiring specialist skills was also articulated, with the support of families.
Conclusion: Skilled nursing care in the patient's home was found to be in great social demand in 2002. Many families are trying to provide active support to this. A further increase in the delivery of this type of care may be expected, especially if the nursing care/long-term care account is introduced as a new form of funding.
