The use of dance as therapy and the measurement of its effectiveness in elderly patients suffering from type 2 diabetes
Járomi. M., Kálmán, A.

The objective of the study is to measure the effect of dance as an aerobic movement on the blood sugar level of elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Method: Movement therapy consisted of using dance styles that patient liked the most and of transforming them on the basis of the principles of physiotherapy and coaching theories. Muscle strengthening and muscle mass improving techniques were used, too. Actual blood sugar and HbA1c levels were monitored during the four-month programme.
Results: As a result of the four-month therapy, both the HbA1c and actual blood sugar levels remained in the normal range.
Conclusion: a coaching programme carried out with an appropriate intensity and frequency may be an effective complement to the therapy and rehabilitation in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Keywords: type 2 diabetes, dance therapy, elderly age.
